Instrumentation & Controls Programming Engineer

Location: Huntsville, AL

Industry: Engineered Systems / Defense Manufacturing

Salary: $120k-$150k

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree (B.S.) from four-year college or university in a related field (e.g. electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, mechatronics engineering etc.) and a minimum of 10 years of directly related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • 10 years of experience as an instrumentation and controls engineer.
  • Experience performing PLC Programming and HMI design and development using Rockwell Automation RSLogix/Studio 5000 SW. Experience using Rockwell Studio 5000 and MATLAB required.
  • Experience designing control systems for complex mechanisms required.
  • Ability to design and engineer instrumentation and control (I&C) and electrical systems. Previous commercial or DOE nuclear experience a strong plus.
  • Design and engineer systems and equipment requiring motion control
  • Perform control system integration with Adams Hexagon using MATLAB
  • Must have US Citizenship with ability to attain/maintain government security clearance.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Professional Engineer (PE) license a strong plus.
  • Ability to utilize Electrical Analysis packages such as ETAP or SKM to perform load flow, short circuit, harmonic analysis, motor starting, AC and DC Arc Flash studies and protection/ coordination studies for low voltage systems of moderate complexity is a plus.
  • Experience with MHI a strong plus.
  • Experience with developing calculations using the Nuclear qualified version of ETAP is preferred.
  • Expert level knowledge of industry standards NFPA 70, NFPA 70E, NFPA 79, and UL 508A.
  • Working knowledge of EMI MIL standards, NUREGs, IEEE grounding standards, IEEE color books, IEC and DOE electrical standards is preferred.
  • Ability to conceptualize an electrical design of high complexity for nuclear and non-nuclear projects during the bid phase of projects.
  • Ability to prepare engineering and design documents requiring the rigor and detail of NQA-1, 10CFR50 Appendix B or equivalent.

Responsibilities:

  • Performs engineering, design and analysis related to the design, development, and implementation of instrumentation and control and electrical systems and equipment used with and to support process, mechanical and electrical hardware systems and equipment.
  • PLC Programming using Rockwell Automation RSLOGIX/Studio 5000.
  • HMI Development using Rockwell Automation RSLOGIX/Studio 5000
  • Prepare design and procurement specification, design basis documents, system description documents, white papers, trade studies and presentations. This requires strong technical writing and communication skills.
  • Prepare proposals, scopes of work, cost and schedule estimates and basis of estimates
  • Prepare, control narratives and perform engineering associated with the development of functional control logic diagrams, block diagrams, wiring diagrams and schematics.
  • Develops test strategies, devices, and systems.
  • Prepare test plans and procedures
  • Plan and implement research methodology and procedures to apply principles of electrical theory to engineering projects
  • Analyzes equipment to establish operating data, conducts experimental tests and evaluates results
  • Additional responsibilities as assigned.
