Job Description

Laser Control Engineer

Salary: $180k - $205k/yr.

Location: Fort Belvoir, VA

Industry: Department of Defense

Clearance: Active Secret clearance, Ability to obtain TS

Qualifications:

  • A Master s degree in a technical field such as engineering, mathematics, physical sciences, or computer science.
  • At least 12 years of full-time professional experience in a technical field related to missile defense and/or technical analysis of a complex Department of Defense (DoD) weapon system.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience with the design of beam control systems for high energy lasers
  • Experience performing analytical modeling of beam control system performance and beam propagation through the atmosphere
  • Experience assessing laser system integration with weapons platforms
  • Experience with architecture analysis and system performance criterion

Responsibilities:

  • Develop Directed Energy Weapon (DEW) System Concepts with supporting subsystems and integration into candidate ground sites, air vehicles, or spacecraft
  • Perform analyses of atmospheric effects to characterize their effect on DEW weapon-level effectiveness
  • Develop an assessment of the feasibility of implementing each candidate DEW System Concept in a Directed Weapon System Concept Feasibility Report
  • Develop design-level analyses of key mechanical components, such as new optical structures and isolated metering structures
  • Perform preliminary engineering analyses and design to develop concepts, identify, and characterize working examples of the full directed energy beam control train: beam clean-up, wave front sensing, and beam expander, through to the beam exit aperture
  • Conduct analyses of turbulence effects on optical beam propagation including the effects of local flow fields around ground sites or air vehicles and their contribution to the overall Strehl ratio for representative wind speeds or air speeds and altitudes
