Senior Drafter/ Designer
Location: Fredericksburg, VA
Industry: Defense
Salary: $60,000 and up based on experience
Employment Type: Direct Placement


Summary:
Supports the department by creating a variety of complex mechanical/electrical parts, assemblies and dimensional drawings using SolidWorks CAD. Compiles bills of materials and assists in the assembly and testing of prototypes. Leads continuous improvement initiatives. Mentor s colleagues.

Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Works with multidisciplinary design teams in a cooperative and supportive manner
  • Creates multi-view dimensional drawings of parts and assemblies
  • Implements geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T) on drawings to ensure proper fitment and functionality of parts and assemblies
  • Serve as an authority on GD&T and drawing quality for the department
  • Prepares bills of material (BOMs) and specifications
  • Creates various documentation and processes engineering changes
  • Optimizes design for cost, manufacturability, maintainability while achieving functional design requirements
  • Makes various calculations, such as strength of materials, weights, basic forces, and stresses, frequently using charts and tables
  • Works with engineers to create designs and resolve issues
  • Provides assistance to lesser experienced designers by communicating work priorities, providing technical assistance and verifying accuracy of work
  • Maintains CAD equipment by following manufacturer s instruction and procedures; performing preventive maintenance; calling for repairs, as required
  • Supports, communicates, reinforces and defends the mission, values and culture of the organization
  • Adheres to all quality and safety standards
Requirements:
  • Associates degree in related field or equivalent experience required; Bachelors degree preferred
  • 5+ years strong performance as designer
  • Must be able to speak, read and understand English
  • Able to work independently for a weekly basis
  • Expert user of CAD programs, Solidworks preferred
  • Expert knowledge of geometric dimensioning and tolerancing standards (GD&T)
  • Strong knowledge of materials and manufacturing processes
  • Working knowledge of SAP business enterprise system for Bills of Materials strongly desired
  • Quality orientation and high attention to detail
  • Possesses strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work with customers, vendors, employees and managers at all levels within the company
  • Possesses strong organizational and time management skills, able to work on multiple projects and designs in parallel
  • Comfortable sharing knowledge and feedback with other members of the team, and contributing to site drawing standards
  • Possesses strong computer skills with demonstrated proficiency in standard business software packages (e.g., Microsoft Office)
  • Experience with programming Vision Measurement Machine preferred, or willingness to learn
