Technical Writer

Hourly: $40-44/hr

Location: Orlando, FL (hybrid, 2-3 days onsite)

Shift: 1st Shift, M-TH 6am-4:30pm

Industry: Government/Defense

Employment Type: Long-term contract with potential for permanent employment

Job Summary: The individual will write, in clear and concise language, such technical documents as procedure manuals, service manuals, and related technical publications concerned with installation, operation, and maintenance of electronic, electrical, mechanical, and other equipment. Includes writing such technical documentation as operational specifications, bulletins, articles, and marketing publications. Acquires or verifies knowledge of subject by interviewing workers engaged in developing new products and services or in making improvements, observing performance of experiments and methods of production, referring to blueprints, sketches, engineering drawings and notes, trade and engineering journals, rewrites of articles, bulletins, manuals, or similar publications.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelors degree from an accredited college in a related discipline, or equivalent experience/combined education, with 6 years of professional experience; or 4 years of professional experience with a related Masters degree. Considered career, or journey, level.
  • 5 year minimum experience with MS Office, MS Word and Acrobat Authoring Tools.
  • Candidate must be highly proficient in XML authoring.
  • 5 year minimum experience writing highly technical content for procedure manuals, service manuals, and related technical publications that describes the installation, operation, and maintenance of electronic, electrical, mechanical, and other equipment.
  • 5 year minimum experience with highly technical subject matter content by interviewing engineers and other technical experts, observing production methods or other demonstrations, and reviewing technical specifications, modification kits, blueprints, sketches, engineering drawings, notes, manuals, and similar publications.
  • Ability to discretely plan writing, editing and in-prosses reviews (both formal and informal) tasks required to complete project.
  • Ability to manage project technical writing work from book plan/outline creation through on-time delivery.
  • Demonstrate strong interpersonal, written, and oral communication skills.
  • Demonstrate ability and experience in working effectively with teams, including virtual teams, but also independently or with minimal supervision.
  • Demonstrate ability and experience in meeting deadlines and quality standards.
  • Demonstrate experience in using and applying clear and concise language that adheres to customer-established standards and conventions.

  • Familiarity with NAVY regulations and NAVY Supply Chain
  • Ability to work in a cross-functional IPT environment
  • Experience using a relational database
  • Knowledge of Fixed Wing platforms

Responsibilities:

  • Write, rewrite and/or edit technical documents such as technical procedure manuals, user manuals, programming manuals, service manuals, operational specifications, and related technical publications to communicate clearly and effectively.
  • Acquire subject knowledge by interviewing product developers and engineers, observing performance of production methods, and referring to technical specifications, modification kits, blueprints, engineering illustrations, schematics, and trade journals.
  • Oversee preparation of illustrative materials and Illustrated Parts Breakdown material, selecting drawings, sketches, diagrams and charts.
  • Conduct and Participate in project team meetings and meet deadlines as determined by project schedule.
  • Conduct quality review of materials.
  • This position may require occasional domestic travel.
